Event summary
The Women's Open (originally known as the Women's British Open, and still widely referred to by that name outside the UK) is a major championship in women's professional golf. It is recognised by both the LPGA Tour and the Ladies European Tour as a major. The reigning champion is Miyū Yamashita, who won at the 2025 tournament. Since becoming an LPGA major in 2001 it has generally been played in late July or early August. The 2012 edition was scheduled for mid-September, due to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, while the 2014 event was played in mid-July, the week prior to the Open Championship. The event takes place July 30-August 2 and has a prize fund of $9,750,000 Japan's Shiho Kuwaki won the 2026 AIG Women's Open after a dramatic sudden-death playoff. Kuwaki secured her maiden major title on the second extra hole against Germany’s Esther Henseleit. Both players finished regulation play tied at 5 under par (279). Henseleit forced the playoff by sinking a sensational 40-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole. However, during the second playoff hole, Henseleit's tee shot unluckily bounced off a marshal's leg and landed in a gorse bush. This allowed Kuwaki to seal the victory with a steady par. With the victory, Kuwaki took home a $1.5 million payout from a tournament-record $10 million total purse.
